Joel Dreessen, professional football player for the Houston Titans and former Fort Morgan football standout, plans his mural square with Ann Iungerich, chairman of the Fort Morgan Mural Project. Iungerich holds some of the photo ideas considered for Dreessen's square.

Mosaic Mural FAQs

#1 - Why are the squares already painted??
The squares already have a base color scheme to make sure that the mosaic pieces will all work together. If everyone follows the color scheme and design in their piece it will make up the overall design when all the squares are put back together.

If everyone just painted whatever they wanted, the mural would be total chaos!

#2 - Can I totally change the colors that are on the square I chose?
No. You need to follow the general color scheme of the square. If it was overall a light blue, you can use pastel colors to paint your square but it needs to be predominately blues. Think monochromatic color scheme with hints of others colors.

3# - Do I need to keep the main design elements in my square?
Yes. Those design elements are what will keep the overall design in tact. The edges can be softened but not totally deleted.

Design Contest

Phase one: Develop design concepts for the mural. Designs could include such themes as the people of Ft. Morgan, it's places or even it's history. The designs need to be in a 8"x60" format and can be turned into the Ft. Morgan Chamber of Commerce by March 30.

Winning design will receive $200.

Local artists are invited to submit mural designs as the Morgan County Area Arts Council begins plans for a community mural to be placed in the downtown Fort Morgan area as part of a beautification project.

The mural will be located on the wall of a city-owned shop building between Main and State Streets just north of the railroad tracks. The building is behind City Hall and the mural will face the tracks.

The City of Fort Morgan is paying for the materials for the mural.

After the mural is selected, local residents will then be encouraged to participate in the actual painting of the mural. Further details on that step of the program will be released soon.

Artists who wish to submit mural designs should request guidelines from Ann Iungerich of the MCAAC at 867-2363, fmmuralproject.blogspot.com, or fmmuralproject@gmail.com.

Designs should be submitted in full color to a specific proportional size which is available from Iungerich.

People doing the mural will receive 12-x-12 inch panels and will put their artwork on those panels. The overall wall is eight feet high and 60 feet long.

Mural designs may be submitted at the Fort Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce office at 300 Main St. in Fort Morgan.

The deadline for submissions is March 15.

Selection of the winning mural design will be made by a panel of judges from the chamber, the arts council, the Fort Morgan Downtown Business Association and the city of Fort Morgan.

Mini Mural from Meeting

Here is the mini mural we completed last night at the Arts Council meeting. The background of the man playing the trombone was painted onto the squares before the meeting and then each artist took their square and painted sunflowers into it following the colors and shapes. It was a great challenge and stretched our minds.

FM Chamber Artist of the Year Contest Announced

There is a limit of three submissions per person. The submissions need to be on a scale that can be reproduced at 8 by 10 inches.

The Chamber may use the winning image on marketing and promotional materials.

"Workers from the Morgan County Rural Electric Association wrap up installation of a new barn quilt on Jim and Dee Oswald’s barn at 21338 Road R between Fort Morgan and Brush. The quilt was one of 11 installed on Nov. 24 by the MCREA, which was working with the Morgan County Arts Council. The council creates and installs the quilts for free to promote tourism and preserve cultural heritages in Morgan County."

You are invited to participate in the Winter Exhibit of the Morgan County Area Arts
Council at its permanent home at The School for the Performing Arts. We are pleased to be
working with The School for the Performing Arts in its new home at the historic Lincoln School.
The MCAAC permanent gallery gives entrants great exposure as it is displayed in the main hall
of the school. The exhibit will be on display from November 15 until February 6 and is open 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Wednesday with additional hours during performances.

The theme for this Call for Entries is Winter – entries with a Christmas theme are highly
encouraged.

Entries must be hand delivered to The School for the Performing Arts (downstairs)
between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 noon. Entry forms will be available at that

The city of Fort Morgan has asked the Arts Council to do barn quilts and a mural for the side of a 109' building between Main St. and State St. along the railroad tracks. Resident barn quilt expert, Nancy Lauck, will be doing four 8' barn quilts for the wall and the council will be coordinating a mural for the center 60'. Stay tuned! The mural will be a project that includes numerous people across Morgan County and beyond.

School of the Performing Arts Ribbon Cutting

Thursday, Sept. 3, the School of the Performing Arts will have their grand opening. The ribbon cutting and unveiling of the new sign will be at 4 pm. Make plans to attend this historic event which will also commenorate the 100 year anniversary of the Lincoln School. The new gallery for the Arts Council will also be featured. The school is located at 914 State St. in Fort Morgan.

The Council is working a prototype mural project for Fort Morgan. We are needing about 2-3 more artists who would like a challenge and would like being part of a community project. We would ask that you paint one of these squares to depict a theme of either Fort Morgan history or present activities using the colors, highlights and shading already present.

This project is loosely based on the mosaic mural projects.

The smaller, 2', will be auctioned off at the Brush Rodeo Art Show, July 1-4 in Brush, CO and features a movable stainless steel spur.

"What's Art??"

The spotlight will be on more than music at the International Music Fest sponsored by the Morgan County Area Arts Council (MCAAC), to be held Saturday, May 30, from 11 am to 5 pm at the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Brush.
In addition to food and music from around the world, the MCAAC is hosting an exhibit of several local artists, several art-related workshops and a special “What’s Art?” People’s Choice contest, where local residents are encouraged to bring in items they believe might be art.
“It might be a sculpture from a school project,” said MCAAC president Ann Iungerich. “Or maybe a painting you tried several years ago. We want people to bring their items in for this crazy contest.”
Those wishing to enter the “What’s Art?” People’s Choice art contest can do so either Friday, May 29, from 2-4 pm, or on Saturday, May 30, before 11:30 am. There is no charge to enter the People’s Choice contest.

Deb Horan was completely surprised when she received her barn quilt for Mother's Day. Her daughters had tricked her into picking her favorite patterns so they could supposedly make a quilt pillow for their grandmother for Christmas. Grandma was in on the deal too and had the arts council paint this quilt for her daughter. Deb said that now they need to paint their shed before they can put up their barn quilt. One thing always leads to another!
The pattern is "Stars with Flair" and is a 2' quilt.

The MCAAC will be at this year's Wal-Mart & Fort Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce
Spring Expo April 4 & 5. Admission is free this year!

The council will be featuring the Barn Quilt project. There will be two stunning 4' quilts that will be available for purchase by silent auction, a 2' Patriotic quilt that will be awarded by a drawing, a quilt block coloring contest for the kids and we will have a workshop.

The workshop will be on Saturday at 3pm. It will be a quick step-by-step overview of how barn quilts are painted.

Pam Brown, well-known watercolor artist from Sand Creek Studio in Akron, will present a day-long watercolor painting workshop in Fort Morgan in February. The event is sponsored by the Morgan County Area Arts Council (MCAAC) and The Paint Bucket.

Brown’s workshop will be held February 21 at The Paint Bucket, located at 116 W. Railroad Avenue in Fort Morgan, from 9 am-4 pm.

The workshop is $75 to the public, while MCAAC members will receive a discount of $25 on their registration fee. Those interested can register for the workshop at The Paint Bucket or by contacting the MCAAC at 970-867-2363 or mcartscouncil@gmail.com.

Artist of the Year Sought

According to an article in the Fort Morgan Times, "The Fort Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for its 2008 artist of the year to design its membership plaques.

The winner will be named the chamber’s artist of the year and win $150. Copies of the winner’s work will be used in the business of every chamber member. The original will be framed, unveiled at the chamber’s annual meeting in February and put up for auction.:Entries are due to the chamber office at 300 Main St. by Jan. 30, 2009.
There is a limit of three submissions per person. The submissions need to be on a scale that can be reproduced at 8 by 10 inches.
The chamber may use the winning image on marketing and promotional materials.

New Barn Quilt

This is the Arts Council President's , Ann Iungerich, new 4' barn quilt. It is a combination of the painted quilt pattern and a metal eagle sculpture. It is located in the 800 block of Burlington Ave., in Fort Morgan.

Sterling musician Dennis Fuller will play sets of familiar compositions to add ambience to the Morgan County Area Art Council’s December 3 reception at Café Lotus in Fort Morgan starting at 7 pm. The reception is the highlight of MCAAC’s holiday art exhibit which is featuring the art of four area artists.
In keeping with their goal of highlighting local artists, MCAAC has brought Fuller in for an evening of music as a part of the reception.
Fuller, as a northeast Colorado artist himself, will play acoustic guitar, drum and harmonica as he performs many familiar pieces, from ‘60s sounds to current songs. “Everyone usually knows all the music I play,” Fuller commented. “It’s very smooth and listenable.”
His repertoire includes music from such well-known artists as Neil Diamond, Jimmy Buffet, Cat Stevens, Bob Seger, Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkle, and Bob Marley. He also plays country music, featuring artists like Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, and Tim McGraw.
Local artists Heather Arenas, Ann Iungerich, Bonnie Lieder, and John Williams have their work on display at Café Lotus until January 15, with the reception giving local patrons an opportunity to meet the artists in person.
The reception is open to the public.
MCAAC is hosting this art show as the first of a series designed to highlight the work of local artists.

John Williams

John Williams of Brush has been deeply involved in art since the early ‘80s when he earned an associates’ degree in art at Red Rocks Community College. He produces many landscapes, drawing from the travel he and his wife have taken to variety of places from Alaska to Africa. He works in both acrylics and oils, starting with oils and working with acrylics before coming back to oils.
Williams appreciates the art of Robert Batement, a style that is “abstract realism.” One of Williams’ main pieces at the art show is a tulip done in a Georgia O’Keefe style.

Bonnie Lieder

Bonnie Lieder of Wiggins, a self-proclaimed cowgirl artist, will place several paintings in the exhibit. Lieder creates western art, featuring nature and wildlife. As the only child of two artists, she had ample opportunity to learn her craft as a child and studied under several renowned artists.
Lieder works mainly in acrylics and water colors.

Ann Iungerich

Ann Iungerich, who lives in Fort Morgan, has dabbled in acrylic and watercolor work since a child. She has done many landscapes and interpretive art over the years, and is now branching into a colorful new style. She recently completed a series entitled “Genesis Project,” examining with color and design the biblical account of creation.

Several of her “Genesis” pieces will be displayed at the art show.

Heather Arenas

Heather Arenas of Wiggins specializes in watercolor pencil at the moment, although she’s also done color pencil work and acrylics. Both of her grandmothers were artists and, as Heather pursued her art interest as a young person, her parents allowed her to take workshops. She also studied art in high school and college while pursuing a biology degree.
Arenas is known for her alpaca art and has placed displays in a number of shows, including local ones at the Fort Morgan Museum and Colorado Plains Medical Center.

Cafe Lotus Art Show

“We want to support local artists,” said Ann Iungerich, new president of the Morgan County Area Arts Council (MCAAC), in announcing an art show during the holidays at Café Lotus in Fort Morgan. The show will extend from Nov. 15 through Jan. 15.
Reorganized in the fall with a newly-crafted mission statement, the MCAAC is hosting this art show as the first of a series designed to highlight the work of local artists.
MCAAC member Nick Ng has opened his Café Lotus, 307 E. Kiowa St., to MCAAC for the exhibit, which will be open during business hours. Art patrons will be able to meet the artists at a special reception held at Café Lotus on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 pm.

The Arts Council will meet Monday, November 3 in the studio of Ann Iungerich. The residence is located at 102 Aspen St. at the corner of Aspen and Burlington Ave. in Fort Morgan. The studio faces Burlington Ave. Please enter through side gate.

One item that will be discussed is drafting a mission statement. Here are some questions to get you thinking about what to include in the statement:

Name of the Organization: Morgan County Area Arts Council

1. What do you want to do? (use up to 3 verbs)

2. Why do you want to do this? (“in order to” or “we believe”)

3. How will you do this? (“through” or “by”)

4. Who will benefit from your work? (Describe the people or community you serve.)

Write your mission statement.
5. Give it some style, make it memorable and keep it simple and brief.

Morgan County Area Arts Council has new leaders, list of activities

The Morgan County Area Arts Council is looking forward to several projects under new leadership.
Pat Knight, longtime president of the group, is resigning after 13 years on the council board.
Knight said she needed to find something else she could have a passion about, like art.
Ann Iungerich is the interim president and Bonnie Lieder the secretary.
The council is planning a leadership drive, Iungerich and Lieder said, welcoming both old and new members. Dues are $10.
“Our goal is to promote art and artists and partner with people to promote them,” said Iungerich.
One of the projects is barn quilts, under the leadership of Nancy Lauck.
Plans call for introducing them to the Wiggins area; so far, there are 25 to 30 of the barn quilts in the county, and one is planned near Jackson Lake.
The group will have a booth at the Fall Harvest Car Show on Saturday with member signup sheets.
Also coming up are:
• The Holiday Far, an arts and crafts show Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mark Arndt Events Center at the Morgan County Fairgrounds.
• The CU in the Community Series, starting with Atomic Vision Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Morgan Community College.
